ROYAL THAI’S UNTOLD STORIES

a look into our 50+ year sustainable manufacturing journey

We are not simply a supplier, but have capabilities in-house to take projects from concept all the way to installation.

Our 160,000 square meter modern factory employs 1,000 people and houses an entirely vertically integrated production facility, including fiber and yarn extrusion, wool and synthetic spinning, dyeing, twisting, heat setting, weaving, tufting, needle punching, and finishing. For any custom project, our pre-sales activities include efficient design, sampling, floor planning and estimation services to help our customers. Completing the process, our post-installation support is second to none in the industry.

Welcome to RT Untold Stories, a look into Royal Thai’s 50+ year sustainable manufacturing journey. Kicking off with the source of our sustainable narrative–wool.

SUSTAINaBLE SOURCES: WOOL

At Royal Thai, our core products–Axminster and Hand Tufted carpets–are comprised of mainly wool. This super-fiber is a naturally occurring and renewable resource, coming from sheep who benefit from routine shearing.

Apart from being a sustainable powerhouse of a fiber, wool is also naturally flame resistant, durable, biodegradable, mostly hypoallergenic, mold and mildew resistant, and easy to maintain.

Wool carpets are inherently soil hiding and generally require less intensive cleaning than many other synthetic fibers. They are also good performers in terms of resilience as the crimp in the wool fiber naturally ‘bounces back’ after being crushed.

Benefits of designing with wool

CONSERVATION: WATER

The best way to combat the impact of CO2 on Earth is to support the Planet’s natural process to drawdown harmful greenhouse gasses. This is achieved by photosynthesis sequestering carbon back into the ground via agricultural crops and micro-organisms to regenerate healthy soil. Royal Thai’s manufacturing processes achieve zero waste to landfill and are completely self-sustainable in water supply and treatment. We repurpose and donate 100% of waste water treatment sediment to organic fertilizer.

Since 2014, we have contributed 17.2m kg of organic fertilizer to farming 5,876 acres of Thailand’s cropland each year:

  • 1% more organic material per acre in our soil = 10 tons more carbon drawdown per year

  • Soil based microorganisms naturally sequester carbon into the soil

  • Healthier soil mean healthier plants, food and humans

  • Carbon in our soil acts as a natural water-filter capturing unwanted heavy metals and toxins that could harm drinking water supplies

  • Organic farming naturally sequesters CO2 from the atmosphere, reducing global warming and desertification

CONSERVATION: ENERGY

From improving our energy consumption on a large scale with the implementation solar panels and wind turbines to installing machinery with high efficiency technologies, Royal Thai is committed to sustainable manufacturing in all levels of our operations.

With the installation of our new high efficiency weaving and dyeing technologies, we are able to create our carpets in more optimized fashion for our customers while keeping the planet in mind.

Our solar energy solution accounts approximately 10% of overall consumption, an alternative energy consumption savings of about 1–1.5 MTHB per year. Each device is installed without moving parts and do not create any pollutants, meaning our solar energy panels can be trusted to provide us with clean energy - keeping us weaving + tufting beautiful floor coverings for the long run.

WASTE MINIMIZATION: LANDFILL + AIR EMISSIONS

As a part of the ongoing fight against climate change, manufacturers and designers must band together to continuously review their sustainable purchasing and production processes. At Royal Thai, we’ve established multiple reclamation and emission review programs to ensure a brighter future for the next generation.

The main objective of our carpet reclamation program is to ensure that we minimize the impact of end of life cycle carpet on the environment and human health and safety.

We’re proud to say, since 2009, we’ve achieved our zero waste to landfill goal. We have also consistently lowered our manufacturing emissions from beginning the program in 1999.

Our affiliation contributes towards building Thailand’s municipal infrastructure, ensuring we indirectly contribute to clean transport by considerably reducing the number of private vehicles on Thailand’s congested roads and subsequent CO2 emissions polluting our environment.
